    Job Description

    Position: Government Affairs & Business Advocacy Liaison

    Hourly: $20 - $25 (depending on experience)/30 hours/week.  Position is part-time hourly non-exempt.
    Benefits: Mileage and Cell Phone Reimbursement

    Total Number of Staff: 5
    Population of Area Served: 80,000
     
    Knowledge and experience required:
    • Four-year degree preferred
    • Passion for public policy and community issues
    • Proactively stays informed of legislative issues that impact our members
    • 1-2 years of experience in government relations, community affairs, legislative advocacy with a public agency, non-profit entity, or elected official
    • Experience in coalition building and strategic partnerships
    • Ideal candidate will have experience with a wide range of issues across multiple levels of government
    • It is imperative that the candidate for this position is positive, enthusiastic, flexible, creative, and willing to learn. A team spirit is a must with the Chamber staff and members of the organization
    • Self-starter, highly organized, good time management a must
    • Able to see, understand and communicate different sides of complex issues
    • Professional demeanor and presentation of self
    • Capable of maintaining sensitive/confidential information
    • Ability to organize and manage several priorities simultaneously while working under pressure and deadlines
    • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal and able to be diplomatic and discreet as this is a public-facing role
    • Experience in public relations a plus
    • Knowledge of computers, specifically Mac, Google G-Suite, Microsoft Office  
    • Coordination of projects, meetings and/or events a plus,
    The Government Affairs & Business Advocacy Liaison is responsible for:
    • Research business-related political issues to help keep members informed of key issues and to assist in the development of policy positions.
    1. All legislative research and advocacy at local, state and federal levels
    2. Provide government affairs information for website updates
    3. Compose monthly column for Chamber e-newsletter highlighting recent Chamber action or positions on legislation
    4. Provide content for the “Advocate Newsletter”, a monthly electronic advocacy update for public use that highlights key decisions and actions made by the Chamber of Commerce
    5. Draft and distribute Chamber position letters (immediately following Board positions), executive legislative summaries and press releases
    • Staff liaison to Business Issues & Public Policy Committee. Committee meets 2nd Wednesday of the month at Noon. Duties include:
    1. Prepare detailed meeting agendas and minutes for Committee
    2. Work with issues-related subcommittees (i.e. housing, transportation)
    3. Organize and manage business and community forums. Past forums include: President’s Roundtable, City Council Candidate Forum, & Affordable Health Care Forum
    4. Keep detailed records of past decisions and Committee/Board decisions
    • Coordinate endorsement process for City Council elections and serve as liaison to Candidate Selection Committee with CEO
    • Participate in 30-minute weekly legislative calls with the California Chamber of Commerce (seasonal)
    • Speak at City Council meetings or other meetings on behalf of the Chamber's advocacy efforts, as directed by CEO
    • Represent the Chamber at legislative or policy oriented meetings in the community as needed
    • Represent the Chamber at Access Sacramento trip
    • Assist CEO on occasional programs/projects deemed necessary
    • This position requires regular early morning and city council evening meetings/events.
