ArtWorlds - a Celebration of Art from Around the Globe Featuring traditional arts of India and an Indian classical dance performance Free event! Come to CSMA for a sensational evening of art, music, wine and cuisine! Explore traditional Indian miniatures (Janeff Collection) and Indian folk textiles (Summers Collection). The Indian miniatures paintings (Janeff Collection) date from the mid 1600’s through the 19th century and are painted on handmade paper or cloth. The colors are handmade from minerals, vegetables, precious stones, indigo, conch shells, pure gold and silver. The most common theme of the Miniature painting of India is comprised of the Ragas, the musical codes of Indian classical music. The collection of Indian folk textiles (Summers Collection) is comprised of a range of textiles— both utilitarian and festive. Gathered over nearly 40 years, the collection demonstrates a wide variety of decorated textiles, created with brightly colored patchwork, embroidery, applique, tie dye, quilting textiles and hand sewing to dramatic effect. These 20th century folk textiles were collected with an appreciation for the beauty of design and craftsmanship, rather than perfection. Enjoy a Kathak dance performance by Soyali Goswami and the Kathakars School of Dance. Kathak dance is one of the major forms of Indian classical dance. The origin of Kathak is traditionally attributed to traveling bards of ancient North India, known as Kathakars, or storytellers. Enjoy a reception featuring wine and Indian cuisine! Seating is limited; please arrive early. More info at arts4all.org.
